ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - Governor Tim Pawlenty is asking the state Supreme Court to uphold $2.7 billion in cuts and payment deferrals that he made last year without legislative approval. Oral argument are expected today on the ongoing budget fight. The court is expected to decide whether the governor properly used an executive authority known as unallotment.

LOS ANGELES (AP) - A Minnesota native who starred in the TV series "Mission Impossible" and the "Airplane" films has died. Peter Graves was 83 years old. Graves was born Peter Aurness in Minneapolis. He was a champion hurdler in high school in Minnesota and after two years in the Air Force, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota as a drama major.

BROOKLYN CENTER, Minn. (AP) - Police responding to a call about a suicidal woman found the body of a 19-year-old female near a creek in Brooklyn Center early yesterday. But investigators say they also found signs of a struggle and traumatic injuries to her body. They now believe the death is a homicide.

ST. PAUL, Minn. (AP) - A House committee holds a hearing today on a tax bill that aims to get construction started at the Mall of America. It would adjust a state law on expanding the Mall of America expansion, in a move that Democrats say could get a hotel project there started. Union officials estimated the hotel construction could employ 200 to 250 full-time workers.

REPUBLICAN ENDORSEMENTS
The District 18 Republican endorsement convention took place over the weekend. Scott Newman, Dean Urdahl and Ron Shimanski were all endorsed.

Scott Newman of Hutchinson was endorsed for the Senate seat currently held by the retiring Steve Dille. Ron Shimanski of Silver Lake was endorsed to run for re-election in House District 18-A, and Dean Urdahl of Grove City was endorsed to run for re-election in House District 18-B.

In other political news, DFL Gubernatorial candidate Mark Dayton will be speaking at the Main Street Cafe in Litchfield on Wednesday, March 17th from 10-to-11 a.m. Coffee and pastries will be provided to the listeners.

GARDENER'S GALA
A Gardener’s Gala will be held at Litchfield High School tomorrow evening from 6-to-9 p.m. There will be a special speaker, snacks, break-out sessions and much more.

Meeker County Master Gardener Connie Johnson says the cost is just $5 and everyone is welcome. She says Dr. Mary Meyer from the University of Minnesota will give a special address on the topic of ornamental grasses from 6:45-to-7:30.

Johnson says Meyer has been the director of the Master Gardener program for 13 years and has been the interim director of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum since 2008.

There will be two times for break-out sessions tomorrow evening during the Gardener’s Gala from 7:45-to-8:15 and from 8:30-to-9, and there will be talks during those times on rain barrels, herbs, self-watering containers, pruning, flower and vegetable gardening and the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum. People attending will have evaluations to fill out, and they will be able to visit with all kinds of gardening experts.

Several vendors from various landscaping and gardening businesses will be at the Gardener’s Gala and there will be door prizes. The event is sponsored by the Meeker County Master Gardeners, Meeker County Horticulture Society, Litchfield Community Education and Litchfield Public Library.

The Gardener’s Gala is tomorrow evening from 6-to-9 p.m. at Litchfield High School. For more information, call the Meeker County Extension Office at 693-5275 or toll-free at 877-993-5275.

WATERCADE BANQUET
The Litchfield Watercade Banquet was held on Saturday night at Peter’s on Lake Ripley. During the banquet, it was announced that Dr. Cecil Leitch will be the Grand Marshal for this year’s Watercade parade in July.

Dr. Leitch arrived in Litchfield in 1965 and practiced medicine for 40 years in the community – retiring just a few years ago. His main project in recent years has been promoting the creation of a water park in Litchfield.

Also Saturday night, it was announced that Paige Winkelman had the winning design for the 2010 Watercade button.
