Two local corn growers have been honored in the 2006 National
Corn Yield Contest. The event is sponsored annually by the National
Corn Growers Association.
Bruce Hamm of Litchfield placed first in the state in the AA
Ridge Till Non-Irrigated Class with a yield of 232-point-8 bushels
per acre. The hybrid used in the winning field was DeKalb DKC52-40.
Mike Hamm of Litchfield placed third in the contest with a yield
of 212-point-2 bushels per acre. The hybrid used in Mike’s field was
DeKalb DKC51-39.
Mike and Bruce were two of the 504 state winners. The contest
includes 9 classes with a total of 3,154 entries from 46 states. The
average yield among all winners was 287 bushels per acre –
significantly higher than the average yield of 217 bushels per acre
for all entrants in the 2006 contest and the 149-bushel-per-acre U-S
average.
Farmers are encouraged to utilize new, efficient production
techniques in the contest. The National Corn Yield Contest began in
1965 with just 20 entries from 3 states. The winners were recognized
March 2nd at the 2007 Commodity Classic in Tampa,
Florida.
The National Corn Growers Association has more than 32-thousand
members.
